Police verification of tenants in Pune: a guide for PG owners

Every PG owner in Pune must give the police the details of each tenant who stays with them. It protects your PG, your neighbours and your tenants, and housing societies often ask to see the acknowledgement.

In May 2026 the Special Branch of the Pune City Police Commissionerate issued an order making it mandatory for landlords, homeowners who keep paying guests, estate agents and anyone giving temporary accommodation to submit the details of their tenants and occupants to the nearest police station in writing (reported on 9 May 2026).

Which police your PG reports to

Pune has three police areas, and their forms are not the same. First find the police station your PG comes under.

  • Pune city: Pune City Police Commissionerate. Check punepolice.gov.in for the current online tenant information service, or submit the form at your police station.
  • Pimpri-Chinchwad (Hinjewadi, Wakad, Pimple Saudagar and around): Pimpri-Chinchwad Police Commissionerate, pcpc.gov.in, under Tenant Information, or at your police station.
  • Pune rural: Pune Rural Police, puneruralpolice.gov.in, or at your police station.

What happens if you don’t

Not reporting a tenant can lead to action for disobeying an order lawfully made by a public servant, under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which replaced Section 188 of the IPC. The Pune Rural Police order of July 2025 says this in so many words. More important than any fine: if something happens, you want to be the owner who did it properly.

What to keep ready for each tenant

  • A recent photo of the tenant.
  • An ID proof: Aadhaar (the masked copy, where it is accepted), passport, driving licence, voter ID or PAN.
  • Their permanent home address and phone number.
  • Their workplace or college, with its address.
  • A local contact, if they have one.
  • Your own details as the owner: name, address and phone.
  • A copy of the leave and licence agreement, if the station asks for it.

Step by step

  1. Find the police station your PG comes under, and whether it takes the form online.
  2. Fill in the tenant information form, online or on the station’s paper form.
  3. Attach the photo and ID proof.
  4. Submit it when the tenant moves in, or before.
  5. Keep the acknowledgement number or the stamped copy in the tenant’s file.
  6. Do it for every new tenant, even for a short stay.

Tips from running a PG

  • Collect everything at registration. Asking for a college address three weeks later is how forms stay pending.
  • Keep a list of who is not reported yet. In a busy month, one or two always slip through.
  • Keep the acknowledgements together. Your society, the police on a visit, or a tenant’s company may ask for them.

Nivaas does the paperwork for you. It fills the police tenant-information form from the registration details, prints it with the ID copy or saves a folder ready for the police website, shows which tenants are not reported yet and what is still missing, and keeps the date and acknowledgement number.
